Paco

Overview:

This is a group project from a two-week-long design sprint. My group’s mission was to get children outside more. We had to create an ecosystem of products that addressed our problem statement with lasting results. Through research and user insights, we created solutions and a system of products.

Paco is a new non-profit organization that creates parks for both the child and parent. Our main goal is to bring parents out with their children willingly and with ease of mind. In turn, we can get more children outside allowing them to gain social skills and other health benefits.

This is a group project with Anna Koebel (playground), Ben Franson (hub), and Richy Ramirez-Cobain (Palco). I created and designed the brand identity, the app and the slide deck.

of surveyed Oregon parents wanted more outdoor activity for their kids

Less time outdoors has been linked to health problems including childhood obesity, vitamin D deficiency, attention difficulties, and higher rates of emotional illnesses like anxiety and depression.

We used IDEO’s brainstorm framework to journey map our users day to day. Thinking about the child that we want to play outside more, how they’re feeling and what might be preventing them from going outside. As well, we ideated the parent or guardian’s journey and when and how they interact with their child.

This process was fueled by our primary research and secondary research insights.

Journey Map

In my group project, along with the app, I drew our user journey map of a regular Paco user's journey from home to park.

This was an essential part of the pitch. After presenting our solutions and findings, we had to contextualize how all the moving parts interact and at which points. Journey mapping allowed us to make sure all the pain points were met that we wanted to tackle.

Bringing all of our pieces together

As a group, we were individually working on the different components of the Paco ecosystem. I created the app that connects parents and communities to the physical Paco spaces that were designed by Ben Franson and Anna Koebel. The app is linked to a tracker device by Richy Ramirez-Cobain. The four work together to increase time outside in children by giving reassurance, safety and community to the parents.

“I want my kids to want to go outside rather than feel forced to.”

“I dread going to parks when it’s cold and wet. There’s nothing worse than packing everything up to go to a park and then the kids are over it in five to ten minutes.”

“I’m always thinking about busy roads nearby, what if my kids chase a ball into the street?”
